Solid phase extraction is a physical extraction process that involves both liquid and solid phases. In solid-phase extraction, the adsorption force of the solid phase on the separated substance is greater than that of the solvent used to dissolve the separated substance. When the sample solution passes through the adsorbent bed, the separated substances concentrate on its surface, while other sample components pass through the adsorbent bed; By using adsorbents that only adsorb the separated substance without adsorbing other sample components, high-purity and concentrated separated substances can be obtained.


When a gas sample passes through a chromatographic column, the fixed phase in the column has different adsorption and dissolution abilities for the components in the measured gas sample, which is also known as the different distribution coefficients of the components in the stationary phase and mobile phase of the gas sample. When the gas sample is carried into the chromatographic column by the carrier gas and continuously moves forward, the components with smaller distribution coefficients (i.e. the ability to be dissolved and adsorbed by the stationary phase) move faster, while the components with larger distribution coefficients move slower. The components with smaller distribution coefficients flow out of the chromatographic column first. The components with high partition coefficients flow out of the chromatographic column to achieve separation of each component.
