Nitric acid, with the molecular formula HNO3, is an inorganic acid with strong oxidizing and corrosive properties, and its anhydride is dinitrogen pentoxide. Nitric acid is less acidic than sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid (PKa=-1.3), easily soluble in water, completely ionized in water, and its dilute solution is colorless and transparent at room temperature, while its concentrated solution is colorless and transparent. However, concentrated nitric acid is prone to decompose and produce nitrogen dioxide, which appears brown at room temperature. Nitric acid is unstable and prone to visible light decomposition. Pure nitric acid is a colorless and transparent liquid, concentrated nitric acid is a colorless liquid (dissolved in nitrogen dioxide), and under normal circumstances it is a colorless and transparent liquid. There is a suffocating and irritating odor. The concentrated nitric acid content is about 68% and is easily volatile. The white mist produced in the air is small droplets of nitric acid formed by the combination of nitric acid vapor and water vapor. Exposure to light can produce nitrogen dioxide and turn it brown. Has strong acidity. Can turn wool fabrics and animal tissues into a tender yellow color. Can react violently with ethanol, turpentine, carbon, and other organic compounds. Can be miscible with water.
